Being In The Now | Vol. 6

The most listened to episode this week was Friday's PassionRST on The PRST. In this episode I briefly touch on Cal Newport's book So Good They Can't Ignore You and then discuss why I am so fixated on passion, the role it will in people's journey, and how I want to encourage more people to bring more passion in their life--there's not one "right" way to find or create it. All that is important is that you make more space for it in your Pursuit and begin to trust it as your guide.

Each week this section will consist of curated blog posts, articles, podcasts, videos, etc. that address Passion, Relationships, Self, and Time--the components of PRST.

As I shared over on the podcast in this week's episode of The PRST, I don't believe there is one way for you to find your passion. As I discussed, Cal Newport wrote a book suggesting you should not follow your passion and instead should find something you are good at and allow for passion to develop. This is one way to bring more passion and ultimately happiness to your life.

However, it isn't the only way. You'll have to listen to the episode to hear more.

I stumbled across this from George Silverman: Meaning, Purpose, & Passion - How to find more motivation, energy & joy. which has some great tips for finding or creating passion, why it is important, and how it has helped George on his own Pursuit. I've learned over the years that two people saying similar things will resonate with people differently. For example, back in my CrossFit days the snatch, an Olympic lift, always gave me trouble. The head coach would give me cues but I could never get the timing of the lift down. But one day another coach was filling in and gave me a different cue--she was saying the same thing but for some reason the way she delivered the cues clicked.

You'll see a lot of similar themes in Silverman's post as you see/hear here. You'll also see some different takes, which is good, since there are no absolutes in finding your passion and creating a more fulfilled life.

"People who have life meaning and purpose feel enthusiasm, direction, ambition, and pleasure. They feel assertive, confident, and optimistic. They are resilient and persistent. In other words, they are awake & alive. Their lights are on."

-George Silverman

Last week I referenced the Dissect podcast episode discussing Mac Miller's song "2009". This week I revisited the podcast and listened to the episode discussing Miller's song "Ladders" and it might be a slight stretch to share that episode in the Relationship section of the email but in the very beginning of the episode Cole Cuchna, the host, intros the song and the symbolism behind a ladder. He first shares the biblical meaning for a ladder and then introduces the additional symbolism Mac Miller uses in the song. In addition to the symbolism of ascension, in "Ladders" Miller also uses a ladder to represent "the only thing we know for sure that we have right here, right now...each other."

If you've never listened to an episode of Dissect you're in for a treat. Each episode breaks down a song, explores the deeper meaning behind the lyrics, why certain chords were chosen and arranged they way they were, and other "hidden" components that show how talented some of our favorite artists really are.

In addition to the discussion about the importance WE are to each other, the song touches on other subject that are relevant to your Pursuit. I've listened to "Ladders" countless times...Mac Miller's album "Swimming" is one of my go-to's for when I fly and I've never listened to the song with the lens Cuchna presents. After learning more about the depth of Miller's talent and creativity, I have become an even bigger fan and it saddens me even more that we lost him a few years ago. Such an amazing talent and human being gone too soon.

Check out Dissect Ladders by Mac Miller (it's a Spotify podcast so you will only find it there).

This Monday I started reading Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now. Much like The Alchemist,I was aware of the book years ago but never picked it up. I actually remember foolishly reading the Amazon reviews and the negative reviews led me to just saving the book in my wish list. Looking back, I know I didn't read it when I first came across it because it would have been wasted on me. I wasn't ready for the message...not just to consider what Eckhart writes about but to actually sit with it and make a conscious effort to be more present...to be in the Now.

But this week, I was ready.

I'm over half way done with the book and have been making notes and underlining like crazy. This will definitely be a book I revisit many times. First, I'm sure I'm only picking up a fraction of what I should be. I anticipate each time I read it I will pick up something I missed in previous reads. Secondly, being present and living in the Now goes against everything we've been taught so it is hard--reminders will be helpful for being more present.

I know I throw a lot of books at you but when I find one that is meaningful to me I want to share with you--I never want anyone coming back to me asking, "why didn't you tell me about this amazing book/podcast/video/movie?" 😀 Interestingly enough, I'm learning there are a lot of people in my network who have read the book and have been positively impacted by it.

Should you decide to pick up a copy I ask that you read it with an open mind. Take time to read it and really sit with the words on the page--this isn't a book I'd rush through. Make notes, journal about the emotions and thoughts that come up as you read and try to implement some of the basic principles. I've caught myself in the Now a couple of times this week---just for a second but I've been able to slow down and just Be.

One more thought about the book...
