Are You Thinking Too Much? | Vol. 7

Hey there,

As you may have heard on this week's episode of The PRST I found myself overthinking the future of PRST and the path it would go down. While overthinking can become a distraction and an inhibitor, I did land on some good ideas and thoughts about PRST. One of which brings a little of my financial advisor hat to PRST.

I'm not sure this will become true...but part of my overthinking was related to who PRST will resonate with as it continues to grow. By the nature of what I share, the guests I have on the podcast, and who I am I believe, while PRST's message is applicable to everyone, it will resonate most with creatives and entrepreneurial individuals. After all, you have to be a bit of a risk taker and take charge individual if you are going to allow your passion to be your guide and create the life you want. And if you're a creator or entrepreneur you can't avoid the cryptoasset space.

Right now, there are a lot of exciting opportunities being built and evolving in the crypto and Web 3 spaces. PRST is going to incorporate the new technology, platforms, and community building that crypto provides as it continues to grow--the first step was launching our blog over on Mirror.xyz.

If you are not aware of the opportunities that crypto provides for entrepreneurs and creatives, check out this tweet by PRST favorite Jack Butcher:

We provided a little commentary in the retweet but if you're new to the space, the royalty that Jack received was from one of his NFTs being resold. As the creator of the art, Jack not only received compensation when he originally sold the NFT he will also receive a royalty in perpetuity every time his NFT is sold. Allow me to grab my cane and glasses...in the old days, an artist would sell their art and receive payment then. Future collectors would benefit from the artist's brand growing as they would keep all of the gains from reselling the art--the artist who created ALL of the value was left out.

The game is changing for creators and entrepreneurs and I love it. Expect to see more about the developing space and how it might fit into your Pursuit. Jack's experience is just one example of how a business built on passion can support a creator in a more significant way than ever.

Let's get to The Weekly PRST...

This Week's Top PRST

The most listened to episode this week was Friday's Don't Overthink on The PRST. In this episode, I discuss how we often get in our own way by overthinking. When you're on your Pursuit your passion will be your guide and while it's important to do some planning it's just as important to stay out of your own way.

PassionRelationshipsSelfTime

Each week this section will consist of curated blog posts, articles, podcasts, videos, etc. that address Passion, Relationships, Self, and Time--the components of PRST.

I don't love the term "hustler", unless Pharrell is singing it.

Hustle culture has morphed from encouraging people to be creative, work hard, and think outside the box to improve their situations or even follow their passion. Thanks to social media, hustle culture has morphed into flexes about how "hard" people should work (it's debatable how much those talking about how hard they are working are actually working), shallow inspirational quotes, and pictures in front of expensive cars and homes (again, it's debatable how real these photo-friendly lives are).

I'm glad I didn't let seeing "hustler" on the title of this video stop me from giving it a watch.

Now, there are some "hustle culture" moments in the video (a "Monday to Monday thing" and "No Days Off Mentality") but overall there is a lot of overlap between what I would include in the PRST mindset and this version of the Hustler's mindset ("the hustler knows how to prioritize their time" and "the hustler does not waste time"--we know time is too precious to waste). Maybe one day I'll record a similar video for the PRST mindset 😀.

Ok, I'll let you find the parts of the video that speak to you--I'd love to hear what resonated the most with you. Hit reply and share the parts of the hustler's mindset is a part of your PRST mindset.

"Whatever it is you're setting out to do is going to requite different version of yourself. If you're going MANIFEST in your hands what you see in your head then you going to have to have the courage, the confidence, the self-belief, and the self-determination to go out every single day and make it happen."

There was an opinion piece in The New York Times that got a lot of attention this week. It really doesn't have anything to with relationships but I didn't have anything for this section this week, so I figured I'd share it here. The title of the article is "The Rich Are Not Who We Think They Are. And Happiness Is Not What We Think It Is, Either." I don't think the findings in this article will shock many of you--money is not a reliable path to happiness, the greatest incomes come from ownership and equity, not W-2s, and business owners can make just as much money as actors and athletes.

As I was reading the article, which I looked up after listening to Jack Butcher talk about it on this week's Not Investment Advice podcast, I couldn't believe someone would have such a narrow understanding of happiness and wealth creation.

"First, rich people own. Among members of the top 0.1 percent, the researchers found, about three times as many make the majority of their income from owning a business as from being paid a wage. Salaries don’t make people rich nearly as often as equity does."

and

"This is crucial to keep in mind for the many of us who are not doing the obvious things that make people happy. We are falling for traps that the data says are unlikely to make us happy."

As you continue on your Pursuit, use this article as a reminder of what leads to happiness in general and specifically for YOU and the financial benefits of building your own business, if that is a part of your Pursuit.

Kendrick Lamar's long awaited album has been on constant repeat for me over the last week. Throughout the album there are a few reoccurring themes, one of which is "Self". In one particular song, Mirror, Kendrick repeats "I choose me, I'm sorry." If you are a hip-hop fan I'm sure you've listened to the album already--I challenge you to go back and listen to it specifically for the moments Kendrick address "Self". You'll also notice some other PRST related topics but just focus on the S the next time you listen.

If you haven't listened to the album yet you can check it out here, assuming you have Spotify or Apple Music. Listen through it the first time just to enjoy the new album and the work of art that it is. Then give it a second listen to pay more attention to the lyrics related to "Self". This isn't meant to be an album review but I had high expectations for this album and it exceeded them. This was the perfect album to cap off Kendrick's career with TDE--I'm hopeful he'll be back to recording in the future. But for now, I know he's following his passions on his Pursuit.

Cole Cuchna and company on the Dissect podcast recorded a great first impression episode which will help you break down the complexity of the album.

If there are any PRST fam in Columbus I'll be in your neighborhood on August 16th to see Kendrick in concert--maybe we can have the first PRST meet up?!?
