Is Your Pursuit For Growth Or Fame? | Vol. 2

Vol. 2

Hey there,

It's beginning to look and feel like spring here in Fishers. To those of you who get to live in this weather year round, I'm extremely jealous. To those of you who get to suffer through the cold grey winters, I think we're on the other side of the gloom!

And with spring comes the opportunity for more energy, creativity, and time outside. I don't know about you but when I wake up and the sun is out, the birds are chirping, and it's warm I just feel so much more motivated and excited to get into the day. My creativity and productivity spikes too. I'm excited to go into this spring in the space that I'm in because I know more about myself, have more time, and a level of clarity I've never had, especially since starting my firm RLS Wealth back in 2015.

The last 7 years have been a preparation for PRST.

It's time.

My Notion Is Full

I was telling my wife how The Weekly PRST (still waiting for a better name to come to me) has been so much fun and relatively easy compared to other endeavors I've tried. I started a brand new Notion for PRST. It's the most organized I've ever been and it is filled with content to share with you and expand upon. It's like everywhere I go, everything I read, and every conversation I have comes back to PRST. Peep the picture below of what I saved for this week...whatever isn't used will be moved for future volumes or other content.

I'm so glad you opened this week's email and I really hope it is worth your time! Feedback is always welcome, along with anything you want to share from your Pursuit. I might be sending you this weekly email but we're all in this together and I want to hear about your Pursuit and help out if I can.

Let's get to The Weekly PRST...

This Week's Top PRST

The most listened to and watched episode this week was last Friday's episode of The PRST. Every so often I'll be joined by a guest on The PRST and my guest, Dr. Preston Cherry was one of the best. After following each other for years on Twitter, we finally connected beyond likes and retweets thanks to The Alchemist. Dr. Cherry shared that he had read the book when he was younger and that he was going to reread after seeing a post of mine about the book. I told him to let me know once he'd read it again and we'd hop on to discuss.

And he were are...

PassionRelationshipsSelfTime

Each week this section will consist of curated blog posts, articles, podcasts, videos, etc. that address Passion, Relationships, Self, and Time--the components of PRST.

“It’s right there in front of you, you’re just avoiding it. For whatever reason, you’re avoiding it. You’re telling yourself, “Oh well, yeah, I love comic books but that doesn’t count. You can’t make money with comic books. Fuck you, have you even tried?”

- Mark Manson, Screw Finding Your Passion

Mark Manson brought it with this post. The title, "Screw Finding Your Passion" might lead you to believe it's an anti-PRST post. Oh, but it's one of the most pro-PRST posts I've come across. Truthfully, the reason I clicked on it to read was because I wanted to read something on the opposite side of my beliefs. As I continue on my Pursuit of building PRST I am becoming more stubborn in my feelings about the important of passion in our lives--I still have a realistic look that passion has to be accompanied by hard work, perseverance, drive, and confidence but I don't think anyone can convince me that we don't all need something we are passionate about in our lives.

Manson discusses how most people know what they are passionate about--it's right in front of them--but they choose to ignore it for any number of narratives. I agree with him on this. I also believe there are many people that don't know what their passions are...they've just been going through the motions in life and haven't taken the time to reflect on what they enjoy the most. Hopefully that's not you. If you're here, I'm guessing you're beyond the "I don't know phase." But, if that is you that's ok. Stay with me and my goal is to help you identify those passions.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“Life is all about not knowing, and then doing something anyway.”

“You already found your passion, you’re just ignoring it.”

“He doesn’t need to find his passion. His passion already found him. He’s just ignoring it. He just refuses to believe it’s viable.”

“Because here’s another point that might make a few people salty: If you have to look for what you’re passionate about, then you’re probably not passionate about it at all.”

Give it a read and if you don't follow Mark, give him a follow as well.

If you were listening to The Daily PRST this week you heard I was down in Miami for about 28 hours for a conference or maybe you saw the Reel on Instagram (yup we have that too). This was the first major conference since the world shut down (over 2,000 attendees) and it was great to see so many friends in person. I got to dab up and hug friends I've been forced to see via Zoom or text with for the last two year and meet new friends that I've only known through social media.

I left my time at the Fountainebleau Hotel inspired and feeling loved. I was reminded that I am surrounded by great people, who happen to be wildly successful in their crafts, that genuinely care about me, my family, and my Pursuit--and the feeling is mutual. I'm in awe of the people I have in my life and I know they serve a purpose in my Pursuit and hopefully I in theirs.

My trip serves as a reminder to me, and now you, to surround yourself with people who inspire, motivate, and lift you up and allow you the opportunity to reciprocate. It's quality over quantity and if you can increase the quantity without sacrificing the quality then even better.

If you're looking for a new physical activity to help you take better care of your SELF, allow me to recommend hot yoga--or maybe regular yoga. But, for me it's got to be hot yoga because I love to sweat. I know you can get a good workout without looking like you stepped out of the pool but I love working up a good sweat. When I was a CF junky my favorite season to work out was summer because I'd always get the best sweat.

With my focus on Self this year, I had experimented with different workout routines. I was working with a trainer doing more sports training which I really enjoyed but it was hard to work into my friend's schedule and mine and I was only seeing him twice a week. I tried a couple of online programs but lacked the discipline to stay with them--mainly because they didn't get me excited to workout.

And then I was told about our local hot yoga studio, The Hot Room, by a client.

I signed up without even visiting and went to my first class and was immediately hooked. Initially I went with the 8 classes a month package and by the second week upgraded to unlimited. In fact, this email is a little later today because I'm about to head over to the 7:30 Saturday morning class (sorry--but focusing on Self in 2022).

Hot yoga is the first activity I've discovered since I was that CF junky that I don't want to miss--passion is a must in everything for me and I'm all-in on this.

So why the recommendation for you? Well, first my recommendation is actually to find something that you don't want to miss...whatever that is for you. If you're interested in hot yoga though...

First, yoga is a MUCH harder workout than you realize. I don't care how strong you are or how far you can run, yoga is a totally different beast. Despite its difficulty, it's scalable in that everyone can modify to be able to do the poses and you can see your progress each class.

Second, the mindfulness associated with yoga complements PRST. We haven't discussed meditation yet as a part of your Pursuit, or a least its recommendation (it's coming), but yoga fits right in with that awareness, presences, and calmness that meditation brings.

Finally, last week I talked about the importance of breathing and breath work is a part of the practice of yoga.

So, if you don't have a form of exercise that pushes that passion button, give hot yoga a try!

Almost a year ago I received the call from a long time client to tell me the husband had a massive heart attack while on vacation and that he had died--I was the third person they called. It was totally unexpected. I was devastated...after 14 years of working with someone to help them plan and achieve their goals you become close and the relationship moves on from advisor-client to extended family. Relationships like these get so close that your kids call clients Grandma and Grandpa. While my client lived a great life and was enjoying his retirement, there was one piece of unfinished business that he'll never get to enjoy--an addition to their dream lake house that he'd been planning for years, despite having everything he needed to build the addition.

My favorite Stoic Seneca reminds us that we do in fact have a long time in this life but that so much of our time goes wasted. I also think we put off too many times for reasons that end up not being meaningful and the death of my client prompted me to write a blog post on All About Your Benjamins called "Build The Addition". I will end up writing a continuation of the post here on PRST called "Why I'm Wearing The Jordans" but you'll have to wait to hear more...

Yes, we need to plan and be responsible in life. But we also have to realize that when we reach our goal we need to actually act and live that goal out, aka build the addition. We also need to realize that sometimes we need to throw caution to the wind and just take that chance because despite having a long time in this life, it can be shorter than we think.

The $10k Bootcamp by Khe Hy

My friend Khe Hy has an upcoming cohort for his $10k Bootcamp that starts next week...I know short notice but maybe you're in a position to attend. If not, but you still want to learn from Khe, you're in luck. The sessions will all be recorded. Best of all, the bootcamp is Free.99 👀.

The sessions are the 19th, 20th, and the 21st at 11:30 EST.

Full disclosure: I consider Khe a close friend and mentor. However, I am also a return "customer" of his and am a member of a past Supercharge Your Productivity cohort and ongoing member of the $10k Institute. I want to see Khe succeed (he doesn't need my help) but I also know that his courses and cohorts will benefit people on their Pursuit. It's a win-win for me to share.

What's $10k work?

A high level of $10k work is there are tasks and responsibilities we should be focusing on ($10k work) because it will really move the needle on our Pursuit and there are other tasks that we should spend less time on or even outsource. Khe does a much better job of explaining $10k work here...give it a quick read if your interested in improving your productivity to find more time for your passion.

This won't be the last time I share a course or product a friend or someone I respect is offering--hopefully in the future it might be something from the PRST community. I will make this promise though: I won't highlight or recommend anything I haven't done or used and paid for myself, won't be getting paid for the recommendations, and won't bring anything to your attention I don't believe might help along your Pursuit. I'm not here to shill for my benefit...I'm here to support others and YOU!

You can register for the FREE $10k Bootcamp by clicking here.

This Week Of PRST

The Daily PRST. In this week's episodes you'll:

  • Hear about Chris Brickley, the top basketball trainer whose passion for basketball took him from D1 walk-on to youngest NCAA D1 assistant to working for the New York Knicks to training Carmelo Anthony to training all of the NBA stars, top prospects, and celebrities. It's taken him even further but you've got to tap in to hear the rest. It's amazing what passion, a bet on yourself, and hard work will do.

  • Be reminded of the importance of an abundant mindset.

  • Get challenged to spend more time with and in nature.

  • Answer if it is more important to get or to let go.

Check out all of the episodes here.

The PRST. In this week's episode we hit the archives to revisit an episode of All About Your Benjamins where I'm joined by my good friend Jeremy Walter to discuss the topic of "enough". I don't know if anyone has thought more about the topic and it's important to understand what is enough on your Pursuit...enough money, time, freedom, fame, stuff, whatever. It's easy to keep chasing when you have everything you want--✋ I know this first hand. Give it a listen and start writing your definition of enough--go check it out now!

PRST Shorts. I finished getting enough film for the next short and need to record the conversation to provide the audio. We're probably a couple of weeks away from the next one. For now, get caught up on the first three Shorts.

On Our PRST. No new episode to listen yet BUT I recorded one with the artist Duane Gordon Jr., aka Originally Distinct, Thursday and it was a great episode. It should be up this week on both the podcast and YouTube. OD is one of my favorite artists and it was a lot of fun to get to meet him beyond IG DMs and emails to record. Be on the lookout for the episode soon!

Something To Meditate On...

On my way home from the ETF Exchange Conference I was listening to J. Cole's Off-Season album and when The.Climb.Back came on the intro hit a little different than usual. The song kicks off with a sample from someone, I'm not sure who, I need to look it up asking the following:

"Are you doing this work to facilitate growth or to become famous? Which is more important getting or letting go?"

Maybe that speaks to you, if so think about it.

If not, give it time and as you continue on your Pursuit you'll inevitably hit a moment where these questions will center you and pull your focus back to what is most important to you.

Have a great week and don't forget to tune in to the podcasts for this week's episodes, especially On Our PRST with Originally Distinct. I'll see you back here next Saturday, if I don't see you out in social media (Metaverse?!?) before that.

Keep Pursuing,

Justin
