If You Don’t Take The Shot, Someone Else Will And Become The Hero | Vol. 16

Hey there,

The role of our inner creator has been on my mind lately. I plan on spending more time connecting the dots between our desire to express ourselves, create to share that expression, and finding our passion.

Don't be surprised to see me creating more about creating...

Let's get to The PRST...

Passion. Relationships. Self. Time.

Each week this section will consist of curated blog posts, articles, podcasts, videos, etc. that address Passion, Relationships, Self, and Time--the components of PRST.

As I finished up this section I realized I shared all videos, well all except the Passion section. I don't intend to always share videos...I don't know why but that feels lazy but the truth is this week I found a bunch of great stuff on YouTube while making dinners or giving Silas a bath. So I promise to give you more reading and listening (I'm sure some of these you can find on other platforms just to listen to) but for this week we're going heavy into YouTube.

Speaking of YouTube....

If you haven't please give the PRST channel a subscribe. My first goal is to get to 100 subscribers so I can get a custom URL. That might sounds like a silly goal but it'll make sharing and growing the channel a lot easier. If you've already subscribed, thank you very much 🫡.

This week I started my "Shoot My Shot" Thursdays where I send three emails or DMs to dream guests of the PRST podcasts--in particular the On Our PRST show. I have these weird debate I play in my mind...I want the podcast to host celebrity guests who embody PRST AND I want to host "normal" people like you and I who will be more relatable to listeners and viewers and have a greater chance of helping someone actually take action. Celebrities don't come without large audience and a host with some clout. It's a little chicken and egg...what comes first the large audience or the celebrity guest?!?

I've realized I have access to plenty of relatable guests and will continue to focus on their stories for PRST podcasts. But, I'm also not going to sit and wait around for the chance dream guests find their way to the shows...I'm going to reach out to them and keep trying until my shooting percentage gets better. The only way to improve is through practice and repetitions.

I shared Thursday night on Twitter how I was shooting my shot that night and I actually received a text from a friend that after seeing my tweet he shot his shot and landed a dream guest for his podcast...if I can't get the bucket myself, I'll take the assist.

Don't be afraid to shoot your shot...the worst case is you never get a response. Best case scenario you shout "Kobe" as you shot and drain the shot...which is exactly how I got James Clear on All About Your Benjamins back in the day.

One of the things I love to do the most is have conversations with interesting people. When I look at Gary V, Rich Roll, Jay Shetty, and the other creators who spend a lot of their time talking with others or getting paid to speak in public I want to do the same. Continuing to record podcasts and videos will provide me the reps to improve and the body of work to attract "bigger" names (in addition to the regular creator--I'll never not support them on my platform) to accomplish this goal.

So I'm going to keep shooting...

Cordae has been on my radar since his debut album. I'm not going to lie and say he's one of my all-time favorite artists BUT of the up and coming rappers, he's in the top and his albums are in the regular rotation. His Ted Talk about what he calls a "Hi Level" mindset that he learned from his mom has a lot of PRST principles in it. That shouldn't come as a surprise as he a creator who followed his passion and is living life on his own terms...Cordae is PRST so it makes sense the mindset that helped him reach that level would fall in line on the principles PRST is built on .

Pay special attention to #4 on his list...

Oh, and Cordae was on of the shots I took this week 🤞

I don't love falling back on another video but I came across this compilation of J. Cole interviews--these are from back in the day--and his message on gratitude is a great reminder for all of us. J. Cole is at the top of my list of favorite artists and I am a huge fan of how he has built his record label and team at Dreamville Records.

I will be shooting my shot one Thursday night with J. Cole, if I can find out a way to reach him. That will be an epic conversation when it happens.

Sticking with J. Cole--if you haven't noticed over the first 15 volumes of the Weekly PRST (and my other content) I tend to get into grooves with consuming people's content, which is why sometimes you'll see multiple references to someone in the same volume.

"Love Yourz" is one of my favorite songs from J. Cole...you can find it on the PRST Hip-Hop Mix on Spotify (yup, we have one of those along with a couple of playlists). I seriously get goosebumps every time the song starts. I could have just linked the song but sticking with today's theme of videos I decided to share the official video. When I watch the video I can't help but see PRST throughout as he shares clips with his family and friends, in the studio creating his art, focusing on his self with the workout and barber clips, and I'm sure other references I'll notice next time I watch it.

In addition, there are few things I want more than to be on a stage like J. Cole is and looking out and seeing a full stadium cheering alongside me--they won't be singing with me since I'm not a rapper. I just want to experience controlling a crowd like that once in my life...the feeling has to be amazing!

I was reminded how short life can be this week. One of my nephew's friend's father passed away from a heart attack. I had actually just met the father when I took Roman to basketball camp a few weeks ago--the son roomed with Roman and my nephew. It was a meeting in passing but I can't stop thinking about him...he called his wife to tell her he was going to the ER because he wasn't feeling well. Later in the day, not knowing anything had happened, his wife gets a call from the hospital informing her that her husband had passed away.

Damn. I'm tearing up as I write this.

I used to fear death...I didn't think about it often but like most of us, I was afraid to die. I wouldn't say that I'm looking forward to my expiration in this life but I'm not afraid like I once was. I'm not sure why but I think it's because of my focus and intention to maximize my time here. Whenever it's time for my soul to move on, I know I'm going to look back and know I did the things I wanted to do, spent the time with the people I wanted to, loved on everyone I loved, and didn't have many, if any, regrets.

That's PRST.

I know there's no life better than mine and I'm no longer trying to chase another...instead I'm maximizing mine.

Give J. Cole a listen...
