managing your time and energy | vol. 26
Hey there,
I recently shifted my perspective on how I view spending my time and it has helped me become more efficient, focused, disciplined, and ultimately more productive.
In high school my senior quote was from Carl Sandburg and it discussed the concept of time,
"Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone will determine how that coin is spent. Be careful that you do not let other people spend it for you."
Looking back now, it's fitting that was my quote--of course I was thinking about "time". But back then, and shortly after the yearbook came out, I had no idea why I chose that quote other than I couldn't find anything else. As I remember it, I was struggling to find a quote to turn in and my dad had printed Sandburg's words out and placed it on the side of the refrigerator. With no other options I just went with it. After reading some quantum physics books, I wonder if a future version of me left that note there for me (watch the movie Interstellar to get an idea of what I'm talking about) 😀.
Time is in fact our most valuable asset, or as Sandburg called it coin. The Stoics often wrote about how we waste our time, give it away, and squander it until we realize the amount of time we have left is not very much. Despite my senior quote and my love for the Stoics, I know I've given away a lot of time in my life and while I enjoy being a resource and helping others, it is possible to spend too much time doing so.
Add in scrolling social media, thinking about what you might be missing on social media, and countless other distractions that seem to find their way into our lives and it's no surprise that we find ourselves giving away/wasting time.
time energy
For some reason I shifted my thinking about how I spend my time, where I direct it, and who I share it with to how I spend my ENERGY, where I direct it, and who I share it with.
That was it.
That subtle change in a word made all of the difference for me. I've given a lot of thought as to why this change in one word made such a difference for me and I think it comes down to I can feel my energy, where time is something I don't feel. I know I only have so much energy to exert because I can physically feel when my energy is gone--I feel tired.
When I wind down each evening and I start to feel tired, I want to look back on the day and know that the reason I'm tired is because I used my energy in ways that move me toward my goals...I got my morning workout in, quality time with Ang and the boys, took care of my clients, made an impact on my profession, meditated, and expressed myself through some form of creating.
So, if you're having trouble committing to protecting your time, allow yourself to change your perspective to protecting your energy and see if that has the same impact for you as it did me.
last week's episode of The PRST was most listened to non-interview podcast.
Last week's episode of The PRST was the most listened to episode, not including On Our PRST, on the PRST podcast channel. The YouTube version is out and the team did an awesome job editing it and adding some bonus content to it. Click the image below to head to YouTube and watch the video.
White you're there don't forget to give the channel a subscribe!
Let's get to The PRST...
TED Talk: slow motion multi-tasking
As a cereal multi-taker, this TED Talk serves as a great source of confirmation bias 😀. According to the speaker, Tim Harford "the secret to creativity is multi-taking...in slow motion." Well, if this is true then it explains the explosion of creativity I've experienced over the last few years.
If you're looking to increase your creativity this quick video may help you find a new approach to finding new ideas and releasing your inner Creator.
"creativity often comes when you take an idea from its original context and move it somewhere else."
beyond resistance
I will admit I'm slightly biased because I consider Casey Grisez a good friend of mine but I think his recently released website, Casey's Notes, is one of the best new blogs you'll come across. His latest post, Beyond Resistance, has PRST all over it.
"We cannot pierce the barrier between the higher sphere and our world until we commit and get started."
"There is an elevated and closer-to-ideal version that already exists, and it’s our job to put the work in to bring that version into our world."
"Many of us know deep down that we want to do something different — a project, new hobby, new career — that would push us. It would force us to be uncomfortable and get us out of our comfort zone. The thought is both exciting and scary, and it may make others question what we’re thinking."
Check out the entire post here and definitely give Casey a follow!
mark your calendars: 11/8/22 On Our PRST with Ryan Russell
The next episode of On Our PRST will drop on Tuesday, November 8th and it is going to be an episode you won't want to miss. I truly believe this is the most important and impactful episode I've recorded to date. Ryan Russell is the founder of Twenty Over Ten, a software company that focuses on building websites (and more) for financial advisors. I've gotten to know Ryan's wife Samantha over the years as she is the face of the company and we've collaborated multiple times on webinars, social media Lives, and podcasts to talk about financial advisor marketing.
Earlier this year the Russell family shared that Ryan was diagnosed was a grade 4 glioblastoma, a devastating diagnosis. Upon receiving his diagnosis Ryan decided he was going to fight--he had no other choice. As he put it, "his back was against a wall" and instead of allowing the glioblastoma to win the batter, he committed to being the first person to fully defeat glioblastoma.
In the upcoming episode we discuss his background in design, building Twenty Over Ten, the importance of his team, and obviously how his diagnosis has changed his perspective and life. There is no doubt in my mind that this episode will leave you evaluating your priorities, how you spend your time, and looking to make changes to make every day you wake up the greatest day ever.
this week on The PRST
An Instagram Story inspired this week's episode of The PRST. Moving away from spending money on things and focusing on the people, experiences, optionality, and more that actually bring us true happiness is something you can be told but it has to be learned. The sooner you can experience this transition, the faster your Pursuit will move in a meaningful way.

something to meditate on...
