Finding Your Inner Creator | Vol. 10
Hey there,
This week's volume is going to look a little different than normal. Instead of the PRST format for the curated content, I wanted to focus on a specific topic and as you can tell from the subject of the email, it's our inner creator.
Lately, I've really been thinking about the importance our inner creator will play on our Pursuits and how so many of us don't know Her. We all have a creative side to us. It's just that we don't all explore and express it. Growing up I wouldn't have considered myself creative--I did good in my art classes but that was the only time I ever sat down to create anything. The rest of time was spent focusing on basketball and school work--I often wonder if I would have been a better basketball player if I had tapped more into my inner creator. I think I would have been.
In a past episode of The PRST, I discuss how we born to create and as we get older most of lose our inner creator.
Let's take a moment to redefine or at least put some context to what I mean when I say inner creator or that we are all meant to express our creativity.
I don't know about you but when I hear someone described as creative or a creator, I immediately think of an artist or a musician...maybe you throw in a famous content creator given the increased popularity in the profession. It's because of this stereotype that creatives are only artists and musicians that many of us don't see ourselves as creators. The definition of a creator expands beyond the traditional art-related one and creativity exists in any form we choose to express ourselves. Finding different ways to express your thoughts, emotions, or ideas is expressing your creativity. You can write, sing, record, draw, or whatever method you feel most comfortable--it takes creativity to express yourself in a physical form.
I've found the more I create, whether it is writing, podcasting, making videos, trying to draw, or taking photos the more I enjoy it, the better I become, the easier the ideas are to find, and I learn more about myself.
I hope some of the content I've curated below helps you identify with your inner creator and inspires you to find more time to explore Her. As you begin to create you don't have to share it with anyone--just create to create. Eventually you should share you creativity, especially if it will help you along your Pursuit.
This Week's Top PRST
The most listened to episode last week was Tuesday's episode of The Daily PRST There's Never The Right Time. If you wait for the "right time" you might find yourself in an eternal waiting pattern. There will always be a reason to wait before making a change, taking a risk, or starting that business. Right now it's inflation, a shaky stock market, possible recession, and ongoing war. Once those issues resolve themselves there will be something else.

The PRST section will be back next week.
The Conversation: New Study Reveals Why Some People Are More Creative Than Others
"Psychology and neuroscience researchers have started to identify thinking processes and brain regions involved with creativity. Recent evidence suggests that creativity involves a complex interplay between spontaneous and controlled thinking – the ability to both spontaneously brainstorm ideas and deliberately evaluate them to determine whether they’ll actually work."
Tim Harford: A powerful way to unleash your natural creativity
In The Arena Podcast with Leah Smart: Your Inner Creator I'll be honest, I didn't expect a LinkedIn podcast to make the cut but this is a great conversation about people tap into their creative side and what prevents them from doing so.
Netflix Documentary: Abstract--The Art Of Design I just found this documentary series on Netflix and watched episode 1 of season 2, which is the episode I came to recommend before I realized it was an actual series. I'm looking forward to going back and catching all of the episodes in both seasons, especially the episode in season 1 with Tinker Hatfield the legendary Nike designer.
Netflix Documentary: Jeen-Yuhs Love him or hate him, Kanye West is a tremendous creator and has found how to tap into his creative as a producer, musician, writer, and clothing designer. Watching him create inspires me to sit down and create myself--for those of you who pull inspiration and motivation to take action from others, the first two videos in this series will surely get you in the creative mood.
